Glass Art by Andrew Groner
Artist Bio

I work with borosilicate glass using a GTT Mirage torch and a Carlisle CC torch. I've been working with glass since 2000. I currently work and live in Charlottesville Virginia, working with three other glass artists.

I got into glass through a friend of mine in upstate NY and immersed myself in glass working twelve hours a day with glee. I studied mostly on my own with some help from Jason Abrams, Jonathan Matesanz, scrap kick downs from Hal, Miles (I loved working in your garage), Ben Bear (frozen toes), Jeremy Rounds for inspiration and subtle hints, Willow, Troy Bennett (wish I'd seen you work more), and Charlottesville locals, Josh Pitts, Adam, Nate Galea, Katie, and probably lots of other people along the way.

I've been focusing on spheres, pendants, and sculptural glass work. Most of my work is with marbles. I tend to mostly work with silver and gold to create color. Using metals allows me as an artist to blend and control colors and shades. I have also experimented with different metals and alloys for reactions and colors as with my coin series marbles.

I've loved art and the concepts of art since my early youth. As a child, I was a human canvas for my older sister who enjoyed drawing on me as a baby with magic markers. I then became interested in my own creations, getting art instruction and inspiration from my Grandfather, Maurice Nord. I failed my 6th grade art class for being "too abstract" with my copper foil project, destroying my artistic ambitions. I re-discovered art in my late teens desperately in need of furnishings and something to cover the walls of my first apartment. I began acrylic painting which has evolved in many ways. I spent a year sculpting clay heads and distributing them in a haverford Pennsylvania train station. After a year apprenticing antique restoration, I began working with sculptor, Ward T. Elicker doing two sessions of casting and bronze pourings as well as learning metal work (grinding, welding ect.) I spent time studying wild edible plants and many stints as a cook, and did some tig welding in buffalo NY before I discovered glass in Ithaca. Glass has been a good friend and a pleasant companion to me.

I appreciate all of your support and kind words.
